AI search visibility: what business owners need to know
ChatGPT and AI assistants are changing how people find businesses. Here’s what that means for your website.
More and more people are asking ChatGPT, Bing Copilot, and Google's AI overviews to find products, services, and answers. If your website isn't structured for AI, you're becoming invisible to a growing audience.
How AI search is different from Google
When someone searches on Google, they see a list of links. They click, browse, and decide. With AI search, the model reads multiple websites, summarises the information, and gives the user a direct answer — sometimes without linking to any website at all.
This means your website needs to be:
1. Easy for AI to read. Clear headings, structured content, and proper HTML help AI models understand your pages. 2. Authoritative. AI models prefer content that looks trustworthy — proper security, fast loading, and well-structured information. 3. Specific. Vague marketing copy doesn't get quoted by AI. Concrete, useful information does.
What most business websites get wrong
No structured data. Schema.org markup helps AI (and Google) understand what your business does, where you're located, what you sell, and your reviews. Without it, you're harder to summarise.
Walls of marketing text. AI models skip fluffy copy. They look for direct answers to common questions. If your site says "We provide innovative solutions for modern businesses," AI has nothing useful to quote.
Missing headings. If your content doesn't have clear H2 and H3 headings, AI can't scan it efficiently. Think of headings as a table of contents for robots.
Slow loading. AI crawlers, just like Google's, penalise slow sites. If your page takes too long to load, it might not get crawled at all.
